The flagship product of MERRID CONTROLS is SAMER®TAS, a system designed for comprehensive management of logistics and technological processes in the field of distribution of liquid products (with particular emphasis on fuels) and bulk materials (e.g. granulates).

The history of the SAMER®TAS system dates back almost 21 years, when the so-called Integrated Control and Supervision System for the Fuel Base in Koluszki was implemented. Already in its original form, this system offered advanced technological functions and coordinated the delivery and shipment of petroleum products by rail and road transport, using proximity cards to identify drivers and vehicles.

The name SAMER comes from the combination of the words "MERrid Automation System" and was later registered as a trademark. Currently, the name SAMER covers a family of related products, e.g. the central forwarding system SAMER®NET, or the storage space management system SAMER®YMS.

How does the system solve each of these problems?

1. Ensures electronic circulation of forwarding and logistics documents in the company

The SAMER®TAS system manages order notification and enables self-service registration of the customer at the terminal entrance. Then the system creates a complete set of documents necessary for unloading or loading products and for their transport. The SAMER®TAS system automatically generates the necessary messages for electronic B2B data exchange interfaces with the company's ERP system and state administration systems (SENT, EMCS). The system also has the ability to create various reports supporting services responsible for supervising forwarding processes.

The SAMER®TAS system ensures that the documentation created is comprehensive, harmonized with the company's internal management systems, compliant with applicable legal regulations, and most importantly, ready on time. The system offers the possibility of personalizing the document flow to adapt it to the specific procedures in force in each company.

2. Reduces driver service time and increases throughput of transshipment terminals

Before entering the terminal, the driver must register by selecting the case in the SAMER®TAS system that specifies the purpose of the driver's arrival and the place of service. Drivers with an arrival notification can complete the registration process at the car park - without having to visit the customer service office and engage terminal employees. The driver can print a registration ticket from the registration kiosk, accessible from the vehicle cabin or, if using the eKiosk application, can report their arrival from the application installed on the phone. During the customer verification process, RFID cards, logins, passwords and vision systems that read vehicle license plates are used. After registering the arrival, the driver waits in the car park for a call to enter (information board or text message). After loading the products, the SAMER®TAS system provides the driver with an automatic printout of all required commercial and transport documents at the exit kiosk (waybills, issue certificates, ADT/UDT documents, quality certificates).

3. Increases the safety of reloading processes at the terminal and ensures control over the operation of technological devices

The SAMER®TAS system, through the SCADA application, which enables the registration and signaling of alarm states and technological blockages, conducts continuous supervision over the technological processes of reloading products carried out in the terminal, significantly increasing the level of safety of people and devices. The SCADA application also allows for reporting the working times and movement parameters of individual technological devices, thus enabling their efficient servicing and prevention of failures.

5. Supports security staff by automatically verifying drivers and vehicles

The SAMER®TAS system guard application improves the performance of security personnel's duties by automating the driver and vehicle verification process, which significantly speeds up and simplifies the entire procedure. The system allows the security employee to quickly and intuitively verify the correctness of loading, driver and vehicle identification.

6. Automates procedures for conducting occupational health and safety training for drivers

The SAMER®TAS system enables drivers to immediately update their OHS training if it has expired. To do this, the driver logs into the system at a dedicated OHS kiosk, watches a training video, and then answers test questions. After the driver successfully completes the training, the system enables the continuation of the product collection procedure.

The SAMER®TAS system also supports local occupational health and safety services by enabling the creation of their own occupational health and safety training scenarios dedicated to a given transshipment terminal or storage base. The OHS training editor application enables online updating of test question sets and uploading of new training videos.

How the SAMER®TAS system is constructed

The hardware and software structure of the SAMER®TAS system is divided into three main layers – forwarding, SCADA and object. In terms of functionality, the system is divided into modules.

1. Layered structure of the SAMER®TAS system

A layer is a hardware-software subsystem that can operate independently of other layers. Each layer has a precisely defined interface for communication with neighboring layers.
  • Forwarding layer

The forwarding layer is a subsystem responsible for receiving and issuing products based on orders from the superior system and issuing the necessary commercial documents. The forwarding layer software includes database and applications that act as HMI interfaces in the system (e.g. office application, multimedia kiosk application, guard application). Four areas can be distinguished in the database - the main part is intended for archiving forwarding data, and the remaining ones for archiving files, interface data and history of events and trends of analog measurements. The forwarding layer software usually cooperates with external, business IT systems, which are sometimes referred to as "parent layer”, however, it is not part of the SAMER®TAS system. The software at the level of the forwarding layer is usually uniform on all terminals belonging to one operator, and its architecture does not depend on the specific implementation of the system. Any possible modifications to the software in the forwarding layer can be performed remotely.
  • SCADA layer

The SCADA layer is a subsystem responsible for acquiring, processing and archiving data from the object layer and presenting it in the form of synoptic images. In the SCADA layer, the main role is played by the database server software, which provides information for the dispatch application, transmits control signals for the PLC layer, records and archives object signals and counts the operating time and wear of devices. The basic tasks of the dispatch application are visualization of the object status and supervision of the technological process. SCADA layer software for a specific fuel base or terminal usually shows certain individual features resulting from the different infrastructure at a given object. This applies to the part of the software that is responsible for direct contact and supervision of field devices (interface part) and the part visualizing their status. As a rule, there is the possibility of remote access to the resources of the above layer.
  • Object layer

The object layer is a subsystem responsible for low-level functions of field device support, such as: monitoring and controlling device operation, protection against damage, downloading and converting (e.g. scaling) data. The object layer software is implemented in PLC controllers and is strongly dependent on the object infrastructure. The object layer ensures maximum standardization at the level of tools, programming languages and names, as well as the possibility of remote access to its resources.

2. Division of the SAMER®TAS system into modules

A module is a set of logically connected functions that can autonomously implement separate processes. The division of the system into modules is independent of the layer model. In particular, a module can be implemented at the level of one or all layers of the system. The modular structure of the SAMER®TAS system results in its scalability, i.e. the possibility of flexible adjustment to the needs of a specific implementation.

Standard modules of the SAMER®TAS system:
  • Road freight forwarding module:
The module manages data banks of products, contractors, vehicles and drivers. It allows viewing and archiving of transports and creating and printing of departure documents (issue certificates, ŚJ copies, etc.), as well as manual preparation of settlement data in emergency situations. Providing data necessary for the reporting module.
  • Rail freight forwarding module:
The module manages product, contractor and wagon data banks. It allows viewing and archiving of transports and creating and printing shipping documents (waybills, ŚJ copies, etc.), as well as manual preparation of settlement data in emergency situations. Providing data necessary for the reporting module.
  • Pipeline forwarding module:
The module manages product and contractor data banks. It allows viewing and archiving of pipeline transports and creating and printing tank protocols, as well as manual preparation of billing data in emergency situations. Providing data necessary for the reporting module.
  • Laboratory module:
The module allows you to import quality certificates from the laboratory system, view and archive them.
  • Storage module:
The module allows for issuing warehouse documents and checking the stock status of products. Providing data necessary for the reports module.
  • Modules supervising the technological process (SCADA):
The modules in this group include, among others, the pump module, the tank module, the filling controller module. The task of these modules is to control technological locks, visualize the states, modes and parameters of device operation (e.g. work/standstill, automatic/manual, temperature, flow, etc.), control the operation of devices (e.g. on/off), automatic selection of product flow routes, counting the operating time and consumption of object devices and recording binary and analog signals.
  • Communication interface module:
The module ensures data exchange with external IT systems (e.g. SAMER®NET system, ERP system, laboratory system, SENT system, etc.),
  • Reports and balances module:
The module allows you to preview on screen and print reports provided by other modules, as well as export these reports to files in pdf, html, rtf, csv formats.
